Eight Views of Omi: Ito Shinsui

The Eight Views of Omi (Omi Hakkei) are a group of scenic spots around Japan's Lake Biwa, described in a 16th century poem and perhaps originating even earlier. These views of Omi were depicted in numerous ukiyo-e prints, the most famous of which was a series of prints by Hiroshige published around 1835.

This series by Ito Shinsui was among the first landscapes published by Watanabe Shozaburo at the start of Watanabe's shin hanga (New Print) movement. These prints are said to have inspired the artist Kawase Hasui to begin his collaboration with Watanabe. Shinsui produced only a few more landscape prints after this series, and went on to specialize in prints of beautiful women, or bijin-ga. Several of these scenic areas have now disappeared or have been greatly altered in the past century.
